Stratification variability in the Yucatan Channel and its relationship with the Loop Current System

The non-seasonal stratification variability in the upper 400 m of Yucatan Channel (YC) and its relationship with Loop Current System is studied based on analysis long-term timescales not yet resolved observational studies. Daily outputs from a 22-year free-running simulation performed HYbrid Coordinate Ocean Model were used, modes squared buoyancy frequency estimated using Empirical Orthogonal Functions. Intrinsic ocean dynamics primary determinant dominant spatial temporal hydrography YC. leading mode, described by vertical dipole at western YC section 1.5-7.5 years, mainly determined (YCu) variability. There strong connection between YCu dynamics, hydrography, (LC) intrusion into Gulf Mexico, detachment Eddies (LCEs), cyclonic anomalies surrounding LC. Intense eastward displacements are associated intense YC, presence LC southwest margin, detachments LCEs larger-than-average diameter, retreat; before these eddy detachments, metric values lower than their average ones. Atmospheric forcing induces more complexity System; it produces significant high-frequency signal that modifies low-frequency behavior. relationships found this work could contribute to better understanding upwelling development eastern shelf.
